Tier 3-4 | Practising Analysts

Independent applied analysts delivering consistent analysis and supporting performance decision-making.

Tier 5-6 | Expert & Leading Analysts

Built on Ethics, Oversight, & Professional Trust

The IACF is built to protect analysts, organisations, & athletes by prioritising professionalism.

Key principles:

  • Independent standards oversight

  • Mandatory Code of Conduct

  • Safeguarding and data protection requirements

  • Ongoing CPD and mentoring expectations

All accredited analysts are bound by professional standards and subject to transparent governance procedures.

How accreditation works

Accreditation within the IACF is evidence-based and developmental.

Applicants submit:

  • applied work samples appropriate to their tier

  • a reflective statement on practice

  • referee confirmation

  • professional conversation

Assessments focus on applied competence, professionalism, and readiness for responsibility, not academic qualifications alone.

Feedback is provided to support development and progression.

Apply / Entry Points

Whether you are just starting out or leading analysis systems, the IACF provides a clear route to professional recognition.

THE IACF tier decision tree

Find the tier that best reflects your current role and responsibility

Key Principles of the Decision Tree

  • Progression is based on responsibility, not job title

  • Higher tiers reflect wider impact, not just seniority

  • Applying at the right tier ensures fair assessment and meaningful feedback

  • Assessors may recommend a different tier if appropriate

Apply at the tier that reflects your current responsibility and impact, not your job title or years of experience.

Your Pathway into Sports Performance Analysis

A Student Guide to the IACF

This guide is for:

  • students studying sports performance analysis

  • students on sport science or coaching degrees with analysis elements

  • interns, placement students, and early-career analysts

  • anyone exploring a career in applied performance analysis

You do not need experience, senior roles, or expert knowledge to engage with the IACF.

What Is the IACF

The International Analyst Competency Framework (IACF) is a professional development pathway for sports performance analysts.

It exists to:

  • help you understand what analysts actually do in applied sport

  • support your development from learning → applied practice

  • recognise applied experience, not just qualifications

  • promote ethical and professional behaviour

Think of it as a map, not a test.

Why the IACF Exists (for Students)

Performance analysis is a growing profession, but expectations are often unclear.

The IACF helps by:

  • showing what skills matter at different stages

  • explaining what “good practice” looks like

  • supporting learning through reflection and mentoring

  • helping employers understand your level of development

It is designed to support you, not exclude you.

What the IACF Is (and Is Not)

✅ The IACF is:

  • a development pathway

  • a way to understand professional expectations

  • a framework linked to real applied practice

  • something you can engage with early in your career

❌ The IACF is not:

  • an exam

  • a coaching licence

  • a replacement for your degree

  • a requirement to get a job

The Analyst Pathway (Simple Version)

Tier 1–2: Emerging & Developing Analysts

Most students and interns start here.

Focus:

  • learning tools and workflows

  • understanding professional behaviour

  • reflecting on learning and experience

  • working under supervision

You are not expected to be independent.

Tier 3: Practicing Analysts

This usually comes after graduation or toward the end of applied postgraduate study.

Focus:

  • independent applied tasks

  • reliable delivery of analysis

  • accountability and professionalism

You do not need to worry about this yet.

Higher Tiers (4-8)

These recognise:

  • leadership

  • system design

  • mentoring

  • long-term professional contribution

They are career stages, not student expectations.

Why Accreditation Means (at Student Level)

If you choose to apply for accreditation at Tier 1 or 2:

It shows that you:

  • understand your role as a developing analyst

  • are learning responsibly

  • reflect on your work and development

  • accept professional and ethical standards

It does not mean:

  • you are an expert

  • you work independently

  • you are ready for senior roles

Work Samples (What Counts)

At early tiers, work samples might include:

  • match reports

  • opposition analysis summaries

  • coding timelines

  • dashboards or visualisations

  • training analysis tasks

  • short video examples (via private link)

These can come from:

  • coursework

  • placements

  • internships

  • supervised applied projects

Quality matters more than quantity.

Reflection & Mentoring

Reflection is a key part of development.

At early tiers, reflection focuses on:

  • what you are learning

  • what you find challenging

  • how feedback has helped you

  • what you want to develop next

Mentoring is encouraged and supported.
You are not expected to know everything.

Ethics, Safeguarding & Professional Behaviour

Even as a student, analysts may work with:

  • athlete video

  • performance data

  • sensitive information

The IACF emphasises:

  • confidentiality

  • respectful behaviour

  • safeguarding awareness

  • ethical use of data

These principles protect you and others.

Education & Endorsed Routes

Even as a student, analysts may work with:

  • athlete video

  • performance data

  • sensitive information

The IACF emphasises:

  • confidentiality

  • respectful behaviour

  • safeguarding awareness

  • ethical use of data

These principles protect you and others.

Do I Have to Apply Now?

No.

You can:

  • use the IACF to understand expectations

  • focus on learning and placements

  • engage when you feel ready

There is no pressure to apply early.

What Employers See

Employers use the IACF to understand:

  • your level of experience

  • your professional mindset

  • your commitment to development

Early-tier accreditation signals:

“This person understands the role, behaves professionally, and is developing responsibly.”

WHERE TO START

If you are:

  • new to analysis → explore Tier 1–2

  • on placement or internship → use the pathway to guide learning

  • finishing a degree → talk to your course leader

Final Message. The IACF is here to support your journey - not to rush it. Focus on Learning, curiosity, and development. Progress will follow.

Academy & University Overview

International Analyst Competency Framework (IACF)

Purpose of This Document

This overview explains how the International Analyst Competency Framework (IACF) supports academies, universities, and education providers by aligning learning, applied practice, and professional standards within sports performance analysis.

It is intended for:

  • Universities and higher education institutions

  • Academies and talent development programmes

  • Course leaders and programme directors

  • Placement coordinators and safeguarding leads

What Is the IACF?

The International Analyst Competency Framework (IACF) is a professional standards framework for sports performance analysts working in applied sport environments.

It provides:

  • a structured pathway from education into applied professional practice

  • tiered accreditation aligned to responsibility and independence, not academic level alone

  • a shared language between education providers and industry

  • ethical and safeguarding standards appropriate to working with athletes

The framework is owned and administered by ASPA and operates with independent standards oversight.

Why the IACF Matters to Academies and Universities

Education providers play a critical role in preparing analysts for real-world practice.

The IACF helps academies and universities by:

  • clarifying expectations of applied competence at different stages

  • supporting smoother transition from study to practice

  • aligning placements and applied modules with professional standards

  • reinforcing ethical, safeguarding, and data protection awareness

  • supporting graduate employability and credibility

Supporting Student Development & Employability

The IACF provides students with:

  • a clear understanding of professional expectations

  • recognition for applied work completed during study or placements

  • a structured development pathway beyond graduation

For institutions, this supports:

  • graduate destination outcomes

  • evidence of industry alignment

  • clearer progression routes for students entering applied roles

Understanding the Accreditation Tiers in Education Contexts

Tier 1–2 | Emerging & Developing Analysts

Typically appropriate for:

  • undergraduate students

  • early postgraduate students

  • placement and internship roles

Focus:

  • foundational technical skills

  • supervised applied practice

  • professional behaviours and reflection

Tier 3 | Practising Analyst

Often aligned with:

  • postgraduate programmes with strong applied components

  • graduates in structured applied roles

Focus:

  • independent applied practice

  • reliable delivery of analysis tasks

  • professional accountability

(Tier 3 may be accessed via endorsed postgraduate routes.)

Senior Tiers (4–8)

These tiers recognise:

  • applied leadership

  • system ownership

  • governance and professional stewardship

They are typically post-education career stages and not expected outcomes of academic programmes.

Education Endorsement & Alignment

ASPA may endorse education programmes that:

  • align learning outcomes with IACF competencies

  • include applied assessment and reflection

  • support ethical and safeguarding standards

  • prepare students for applied practice

Endorsed routes may:

  • support progression into Tier 2 or Tier 3

  • reduce duplication between education and accreditation

  • provide clarity for students and employers

Endorsement does not replace accreditation, but supports structured progression.

Safeguarding, Ethics & Professional Responsibility

The IACF reinforces expectations around:

  • safeguarding of athletes and vulnerable persons

  • ethical handling of performance data and video

  • professional conduct in applied environments

These principles complement institutional safeguarding policies and placement requirements.

Independent Oversight & Trust

Independent standards oversight supports:

  • transparency in accreditation decisions

  • ethical governance

  • confidence for education providers and placement partners

This ensures the framework operates responsibly and consistently.

How Academies & Universities Can Use the IACF

Institutions may use the IACF to:

  • map curriculum to applied professional standards

  • support placement quality assurance

  • guide student development conversations

  • enhance employability messaging

  • demonstrate industry alignment

The framework supports, but does not replace, institutional regulations or accreditation requirements.

What the IACF Is Not

To maintain clarity:

  • it is not an academic qualification

  • it does not replace degree programmes

  • it is not a guarantee of employment

  • it does not override institutional safeguarding or assessment processes

It is a professional development and recognition framework.

Working With ASPA

ASPA works collaboratively with:

  • universities

  • academies

  • placement providers

Opportunities include:

  • programme endorsement

  • student pathway guidance

  • mentoring integration

  • contribution to standards development

Closing Statement

The IACF supports academies and universities by providing a clear, ethical bridge between education and applied professional practice in sports performance analysis.
